ECSC Member History Feature No.9 - December

Well.....last, but certainly not least, here is our final member to feature in our 125th anniversary year of 2020. This person needs no introduction, as our most famous member, none other than Olympian and World Record Holder Liam Tancock!

Liam started on his journey towards swimming super-stardom here at our club. Growing up in Exeter, Liam loved sport and played football, rugby and swam. It was swimming that Liam showed the promise in and chose to focus completely on swimming when he became a teenager. Turned out to be a wise choice!

Liam is so proud of his Exeter roots and is regularly in touch with the club to see how things are going and is always on hand to offer support, advice and provide inspiration to our current swimmers. He knows what swimming gave to him from an early age. The support and coaching the club gave him set the grounding towards the immense success he went on to and we know that he feels very grateful to the club and his coaches for helping him in his early years.

Liam started swimming competitively with Exeter City Swimming Club at the age of 9 years old, competing in galas, Devon County Championships, Regional Champs, before progressing to Nationals, where he was selected for the Great Britain team. Lots of success followed....

Liam represented Great Britain in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Olympics in London, FINA world championships, and European championships, and represented England in the Commonwealth Games. He was three-time world champion and a four-time Commonwealth Games Gold medallist. He held the World Record for 50m (Long Course) Backstroke for over 10 years - an amazing achievement! His World Record and PB time for 50m Backstroke is 24.04 secs!

Liam is still involved in the world of swimming, as he is a Director of the popular swim apparel brand, and ECSC club kit provider, Swimzi. Through his work with Swimzi, he attends numerous swimming events and competitions around the UK, Europe and the rest of the World, as the Swimzi brand is now truly global.

Everyone at Exeter City Swimming Club, past and present, are so proud of Liam and what he has achieved. A true swimming and sporting icon who is an inspiration to our current batch of swimmers who are all on their own personal journeys towards success with Exeter City Swimming Club.

Happy New Year Liam!
